Urology Treatments – Transurethral Resection of the Prostate

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate abbreviated TURP is our fifth article in our Urology Treatments series that we have been covering since April 26. TURP is a medical surgery and it helps in removing a portion of the prostate gland through the penis. This procedure requires no incision to the body.

In short, this is typically how TURP is conducted:

  • Instrument named resectoscope is inserted through the urethra to reach prostate
  • Urethra is the narrow passage of urine in the body
  • Resectoscope measures roughly 12 inches in length, ½ inch in diameter.
  • Instrument contains light in the head valve
  • It is inserted through the penis, wire loop guided by surgeon
  • Obstructing tissue removed one piece at a time
  • The removed pieces of tissue are carried by fluid into the bladder
  • Then flushed out at the end of the procedure

Watch how it works:

TURP is normally conducted on patients who have prostate enlargement, often due to a symptom called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Prostate enlargement can apply pressure against the urethra and may obstruct the passage of urine willing to exit from the body.

Some symptoms that are often seen:

  • Hard time getting urine stream started
  • Have to get up more to go at night
  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Leakage after urination

This concludes our focus on Urology Treatments. Starting Tuesday May 11th, I will continue covering hot topics in medical tourism and dedicate the rest of the month to advanced dental procedures and the affiliated medical and dental centers that have been accredited by the Joint Commission International around the world. Until then, thank you for reading, enjoy your weekend and hope to see you soon.

  1. [...] Later in life, obstruction of urinary outflow among males is commonly blamed from ‘choke’ caused by the enlargement of Prostate Gland. Open method of removing the prostate gland is done by opening the bladder below the navel incision. The trans-urethral resection of the prostate gland is another method of removing the organ by small bites and burning of bleeders using trans-urethral scope through the urethral meatus or urinary opening of the glans penis.
